Matthew Roome (he/him) is a saxophonist and arranger based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. His focus is primarily in contemporary, classical, jazz, and improvised music.

As a performer, Matthew can be found in various different settings, from casual bars to performance halls. He has performed with the Jazz East Big Band as the lead tenor saxophonist as well as various wind ensembles, orchestras, jazz bands, and contemporary music ensembles at both McGill University in Montreal and Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s. Matthew also performs with various jazz combos, including the Quintots which have performed at various government events, university convocations and ceremonies, and public performances across Newfoundland.

As well, Matthew makes up one half of Sonic Playgrounds, an electroacoustic improv duo with Andrew Gosse on live electronics. Together, Matthew and Andrew focus on improvisation through synths, live audio processing, and drum loops. Sonic Playgrounds have recorded several improvisations and performed at MUN’s School of Music Scholarship Reception and several MUN Café Concert series events.

As an arranger, Matthew writes music primarily for wind ensemble, orchestra, and jazz band. He has had his music performed by the MUN Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz East Big Band, and TorQ Percussion Quartet.

Outside of music, Matthew is an avid improvised theatre performer. He performs with No Vowels Improv and is an active volunteer with the Canadian Improv Games across the country.

Matthew has completed a Bachelor of Music (Honours) at Memorial University in St. John’s, majoring in saxophone performance under the instruction of Dr. Christine Carter and minoring in jazz studies under the instruction of Florian Hoefner. He is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance at McGill University in Montreal under the instruction of Marie-Chantal Leclair.
